How is breast cancer diagnosed?
Following an initial consultation with a doctor, there may be a need to conduct further tests to diagnose breast cancer.
It is usual for the doctor to make a referral to a breast cancer specialist for other tests. The tests will determine if breast cancer is present and if a surgery is required.
Four common types of diagnostic tests are breast ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and biopsy. Your doctor will explain the detail of these tests to you or your affected friend or family member.
How is male breast cancer diagnosed?
Diagnosing breast cancer in men is similar to that of women. The whole diagnosis involves different procedures, each of which will be explained to you in detail by your doctor or physician.
These procedures include a clinical breast examination, imaging tests, biopsy (a technique that involves obtaining a collection of breast cells for testing).
Depending on the findings from these procedures, additional tests may be required.
